ABSTRACT

This study focuses on the formulation and evaluation of an herbal shampoo using extracts from Azadirachta indica (neem), Psidium guajava (guava), and Piper betel (betel) as key active ingredients. The goal was to create a natural shampoo that was safer than synthetic formulas while effectively washing and nourishing the scalp. The formulations were prepared by incorporating plant extracts with surfactants, thickening agents, preservatives, and conditioning agents. Three different formulations (F1, F2, and F3) were developed and evaluated based on physicochemical parameters such as pH, foaming ability, dirt dispersion, percentage of solid content, surface tension, and wetting time. The formulations exhibited good foaming ability, stable foam retention, and effective cleansing properties. The dirt dispersion test confirmed that the shampoos effectively removed impurities without redepositing them onto the scalp. Surface tension and wetting time tests further validated the shampoo’s ability to spread and rinse efficiently. Among all formulations, F1 and F2 provided superior cleansing efficiency, stability, and conditioning effects. The results suggest that these herbal shampoos offer a natural and effective solution for scalp care, reducing the dependency on chemical-based alternatives. The study concludes that herbal formulations, particularly F1 and F2, hold great potential for commercial application, with further optimizations required to enhance efficacy, stability, and consumer acceptance.
