SCREENING FOR ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF ETHANOLIC EXTRACT FROM SKIN PIGMENTS OF MARINE CEPHALOPOD SQUID, UROTEUTHIS SIBOGAE (ADAM, 1954)
Shanmugapriya R.*, Rajashri Sharma C. and Saravanan R.
ABSTRACT This study explores the antimicrobial activity of ethanolic extract from the skin pigments of marine cephalopod, Uroteuthis sibogae. The antimicrobial activity was screened against species of clinical isolates of Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria namely, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi by disc diffusion method. The pigment extract exhibited good antibacterial activity against human pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacterial organisms. The extracts inhibited the growth of bacterial strains. The antifungal activity of the skin pigment extracts was tested against fungal strains Fusarium oxysporum and Microsporum gypseum. The positive results based on the zone of inhibition on bacterial and fungal strains from the ethanol extracts of skin pigments of Uroteuthis sibogae constitutes primary information for further pharmacological studies.
