ABSTRACT

This study investigates the efficacy of two herbal formulations, NHS and PV Kashaya, in managing abnormal vaginal discharge (Yonisrava). The formulations, based on Ayurvedic principles, were prepared using Nimba, Haridra, Sphatika, and five herbs from the Ficus family. The study evaluates the antimicrobial properties of these formulations against various bacterial strains, including Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the formulations was determined using the microbroth dilution method. The results show that NHS exhibits antimicrobial activity against VRE at a concentration of 512 µg/ml, while PV Kashaya shows efficacy against E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae at a concentration of 256 µg/ml. The study also explores the potential benefits of vaginal douching (Yonidhawana) with these herbal formulations, which may help restore the natural pH balance of the vagina and provide relief from symptoms such as itching and burning sensations. The findings suggest that these herbal formulations may be effective in managing abnormal vaginal discharge and promoting women's health. The study's results support the traditional use of these herbs in Ayurvedic medicine for gynaecological disorders and highlight the potential for further research into their therapeutic benefits. Overall, this study provides scientific evidence for the potential therapeutic benefits of NHS and PV Kashaya in managing Yonisrava.
