Abstract

FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF VALSARTAN SODIUM FAST DISSOLVING TABLETS BY USING NATURAL DISINTEGRATING AGENTS

ABSTRACT

In the present study, the dissolution of Valsartan was enhanced through the use of both natural and synthetic disintegrants. Fast dissolving tablets of Valsartan were formulated using natural disintegrating agents—coconut fibre powder and ridge gourd powder—at two concentrations: 20% and 40% w/w per tablet. These formulations were compared with tablets prepared using synthetic disintegrants, namely sodium starch glycolate and croscarmellose sodium, at the same concentrations. All formulations were evaluated against a control tablet containing no disintegrants. The results showed that synthetic disintegrants increased the dissolution of Valsartan by up to 2.6-fold, while natural disintegrants achieved a 2.2-fold increase. This demonstrates that natural disintegrants exhibit dissolution enhancement nearly equivalent to that of synthetic ones, offering a safer and more biocompatible alternative. The proposed mechanism for the improved dissolution with natural disintegrants is attributed to their fibrous structure, which promotes wicking action. This leads to a hydrodynamic pressure difference that facilitates rapid tablet disintegration and, consequently, enhanced drug dissolution.

Keywords: Valsartan, Cross carmellose sodium, Disintegrants, Hydrodynamic pressure.
