FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF COLD CREAM
*Aniket Gayke, Kedar Joshi and Omkar Herkar
ABSTRACT Cold creams have long been recognized as vital topical formulations in cosmetics due to their ease of application and removal. These water-in-oil emulsions serve various aesthetic and therapeutic purposes, such as cleansing, moisturizing, and protecting the skin from bacterial and fungal infections. The present study focused on the formulation and evaluation of herbal cold creams enriched with plant-based extracts, specifically neem oil and turmeric, aimed at moisturizing and nourishing the skin. The cream was prepared using beeswax and borax, known for their emulsifying and stabilizing properties. Comprehensive evaluation techniques were employed to assess parameters such as pH, spreadability, consistency, greasiness, irritability, and stability under different conditions. The cream showed no phase separation, retained its viscosity, aroma, and appearance throughout the study, and exhibited a soothing, non-greasy texture. The cooling effect is attributed to the gradual evaporation of water from the emulsion. By forming an occlusive layer, the cream prevents transepidermal water loss from the stratum corneum, enhancing skin hydration. Overall, the formulated cold cream was found to be stable, effective, and suitable for safe use by the general population.
