ABSTRACT Atherosclerosis is a disease of large arteries and is the primary cause of heart disease and stroke. It is the underlying cause of about 50% of all deaths in western society. In epidemiological studies, it revealed several important environmental and genetic risk factors related with atherosclerosis. It is a progressive disease distinguished by the accumulation of lipids and fibrous elements in the large arteries. The early lesions of atherosclerosis consist of subendothelial accumulations of cholesterol engorged macrophages, called foam cell. Atherosclerosis is principally a lipid driven process initiated by the accumulation of low-density lipoprotein and remnant lipoprotein particles and an active inflammatory process in focal areas of arteries particularly at regions of disturbed non laminar flow at branch points in the arteries and is considered a primary cause of (ASCVD) i.e. atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease resulting in heart attacks, stroke and peripheral arterial disease. Furthermore, we have discussed about the risk factors of atherosclerosis, diagnosis and its treatment and also the role of diet and intestinal flora in pathogenesis of atherosclerosis is presented.
