MICRONEEDLE BASED TRANSDERMAL PATCHES: A REVOLUTION IN PAINLESS DRUG DELIVERY
Aditya Ghait*, Vaishnavi Dubale, Shivshankar Wader, Nitin Deshmukh, M. S. Quadri and Varsha Kambale
ABSTRACT Micro needle-based transdermal patches are an exciting new way to deliver medications through the skin. They offer a painless, minimally invasive alternative to traditional methods like injections or pills. These tiny needles can bypass the outer skin layer (stratum corneum), allowing drugs to be delivered directly into deeper skin layers, which improves how well the body absorbs them and increases patient comfort. This review looks at the latest advances in how micro needles are designed and made, as well as how they are being used. They are proving useful for delivering a wide range of treatments, including vaccines, hormones, proteins, and skincare products. There are five main types of micro needles: solid, coated, hollow, dissolving, and hydrogel-forming. Each type is designed for different medical needs. New technologies like 3D printing, micro molding, and the use of biodegradable materials have made these patches more accurate, safer, and more effective. Studies on humans and animals have shown positive results, especially in treating skin conditions, managing long-term illnesses, and providing slow, steady release of medicine. However, there are still some challenges to solve such as how much drug the patch can hold, how easy they are to produce on a large scale, gaining approval from health authorities, and avoiding skin irritation. Even so, micro needle patches are a promising step toward more personalized, convenient, and effective healthcare.
