A REVIEW ON SHILAJATU KALPAS MENTIONED IN VARIOUS TEXTS OF RASASHASTRA
*Dr Ravi R. Chavan M. D. (Ayu)
ABSTRACT Shilajatu, a natural herbo-mineral exudate, has been extensively utilized in Ayurvedic medicine for its potent Rasayana (rejuvenative) properties. Sourced primarily from Himalayan rock formations, it undergoes microbial decomposition, resulting in a complex matrix rich in essential minerals and bioactive compounds. Traditionally, Shilajatu has been employed to enhance vitality, delay aging, and improve cognitive and reproductive health. Recent pharmacological studies highlight its efficacy in managing metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus, male infertility, and neurodegenerative diseases, attributed to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and mitochondrial-modulating properties. Classical Ayurvedic texts in Rasa Shastra describe various Shilajatu formulations (Kalpas), demonstrating its therapeutic versatility. This review examines significant texts and formulations to expand the understanding of Shilajatu-based dosage forms and therapeutic applications. Further research is warranted to standardize formulations, validate pharmacological efficacy, and ensure clinical safety, thus bridging traditional wisdom with modern scientific advancements. Keywords: Rasashastra, Rasayana, Shilajatukalpa, shilajit, Rejuvenation. [Download Article] [Download Certifiate] |
