ABSTRACT

The aim of present study was to formulate and evaluate antifungal gel using Calotropis Gigantea for the treatment of fungal infection and to study the synergistic action of Allium Sativum on it. Due to the easy availability of raw material, cost effectiveness and least number of reported adverse reactions prompted us to investigate and evaluate antifungal potential of Calotropis Gigantea by incorporating into a topical gel. The topical gels were prepared and subjected to physical evaluations such as appearance, pH, viscosity, Spreadibility, bio adhesive strength, extrudability and skin irritation. The gels were clear throughout the evaluation. The pH was constant (6.8–7.0) and did not produce any type of irritation when applied on the skin. Viscosity, Bio adhesive strength, Extrudability and Spreadibility were excellent. Furthermore, the stability studies results of selected formulation revealed that formulation was stable under normal storage condition. Control experiments were carried out under similar condition by using Griseofulvin for antifungal activity as standard drugs. Plates were then incubated at 35°C for 24hr. The zone of inhibition was measured in millimeter. The zone of inhibition of prepared antifungal gel was found to be 21 mm and 17 mm of Griseofulvin (standard drug). The antifungal activity of Calotropis Gigantea increased with the addition of Allium Sativum it increased from 21 mm to 25 mm. This herbal gel is safe with minimum side effects. The formulated herbal gel is capable of producing antifungal activity.
