ABSTRACT The administration of various medications for effective treatment of ocular disorders and the patient compliance are some of the drawbacks due to the physiological barriers of the eye. Eye illnesses are affecting a growing number of people globally and can eventually cause partial or total blindness. Eye drops are used in conventional therapy. However, regular dosage is necessary and these formulations frequently confer inadequate ocular bioavailability. To overcome the present constraints, it is necessary to create more efficient medication delivery systems. Hydrogels are multipurpose ophthalmic drug delivery devices that can prolong the duration of medications remain in the body and maintain drug release. The challenges for widely using hydrogel formulations in the clinic remain evident despite advances in drug encapsulation and release mechanisms, biocompatibility, and duration of the therapy. In order to assess the current level of recent research, this paper analyses the most recent hydrogel formulations and their related techniques for application in ocular treatments, spanning from the exterior anterior to interior posterior areas of the eye. The advantages and disadvantages of hydrogels in soft contact lenses, wound dressings, intraocular lenses, vitreous replacements, vitreous drug release hydrogels, and cell-based treatments for regeneration and some of the formulation performed on hydrogels. Additional emphasis is given to the pre-formulation, formulation, and manufacturing concerns of the hydrogels based on individual parts (polymer chains and medicines), the finished hydrogel product, and necessary preparations for clinical/commercial applications, respectively. Keywords: Ophthalmic Hydrogel, Polymers, Ocular inserts and IOL (Intra Ocular Lenses). [Download Article] [Download Certifiate] |
