ADULTERATION IN AYURVEDIC MEDICINAL PLANTS: A REVIEW ON CAUSES, DETECTION METHODS, AND PREVENTIVE STRATEGIES

ABSTRACT Adulteration in Ayurvedic medicinal plants is a critical issue threatening the safety, efficacy, and global credibility of Ayurveda. Whether intentional or unintentional, adulteration compromises the therapeutic value of herbal medicines and can lead to adverse health effects. This review compiles current knowledge on the causes and consequences of adulteration in Ayurvedic plants, outlines common examples, and explores modern techniques for authentication and quality control. Emphasis is placed on the need for pharmacognostic vigilance, advanced analytical tools, and regulatory enforcement to curb this malpractice. Strengthening education, awareness, and standardization protocols can significantly improve the quality and trustworthiness of herbal products.
