PREPARATION AND FORMULATION OF MOUTH DISSOLVING FILM CONTAINING CAPTOPRIL

ABSTRACT Mouth-dissolving films (MDFs) are a novel method of drug delivery that provide a special way to quickly provide drugs straight into the mouth without the need for water to dissolve them. MDFs are a viable substitute for conventional oral dose forms like pills and capsules because of this feature. By avoiding the gastrointestinal tract and first-pass metabolism, these films increase the drug's bioavailability by rapidly dissolving in the mouth. For certain patient groups, including as young children, elderly patients, and those with dysphagia who might have trouble swallowing traditional formulations, this is especially helpful. Because MDFs are easy to administer and have economical manufacturing techniques, their use is advantageous in addition to their quick pharmacological action. Due to its adaptability Captopril, an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor, is a widely used medication for the treatment of hypertension and heart failure. It works by relaxing blood vessels, thereby reducing blood pressure and improving blood flow. However, traditional oral dosage forms of captopril, such as tablets and capsules, can be challenging for certain patient populations, including pediatric and geriatric patients, The results confirm its suitability for populations with swallowing difficulties, supporting improved compliance and therapeutic outcomes. This study aimed to formulate and evaluate captopril-loaded mouth dissolving films (MDFs) for rapid antihypertensive action. Films were prepared using the solvent casting method with HPMC as the film-forming polymer and PEG-400 as the plasticizer. The formulations were assessed for physical characteristics, disintegration time, drug content, and in vitro drug release. The optimized film showed rapid disintegration (under 30 seconds) and over 90% drug release within 5 minutes, indicating its potential for fast onset of action. The results suggest that captopril MDFs are a promising approach for immediate blood pressure control with improved patient compliance. Keywords: . [Download Article] [Download Certifiate] |
