Dr. Sonali Jugran*

ABSTRACT

During the stages of pregnancy and delivery, a woman’s body undergoes many physical and mental alterations. The physical changes are visible externally and revert back after childbirth. The mental changes are not visible every time but have more impact. Negative and depressed mental status of the mother have serious effects not only on her but also on the newborn. Therefore, it is very necessary to identify the symptoms at the earliest and provide treatment. The foremost step in its management is to prevent it. To cope with physical changes, diet, medicines and lifestyle changes are advised. For mental and emotional changes, supportive partner and attendants should be available. Ayurveda has a complete list of dos and don’ts during pregnancy and after delivery. The terms given are Garbhini Paricharya and Sutika Paricharya. In addition to dietary advices, particular code of conduct to be followed during these stages has also been given.
