Abstract

USE OF DURANTA ERECTA L. FRUIT EXTRACT AS A NATURAL INDICATOR IN ACID-BASE TITRATION

*Ms. Sayli Tekade and Mr. Mayur Tekade

ABSTRACT

Indicator employed in titration sense color change in a certain pH range majority of the indicators are natural pigments and are synthetic in nature. Duranta erecta L. is a flowering shrub plant species of verbena family verbenaceae. The current paper describes the employment of Duranta erecta fruit extract as acid base indicator in various type of acid base titration. Same outcome were achieved compared to traditional indicator i.e phenolphthalein. Background for application of these natural indicator rather than synthetic indicator its cost, easily available.[7] Growing interest in the environmental implications of using synthetic chemical indicators for acid-base titration has evoked interest in natural alternatives. In this article, the feasibility of using Duranta erecta L. fruit extract as a pH indicator wasresearched. Aqueous and alcoholic solvents were used to purify the extract, and the ability of the extract to change color depending on pH range was examined. The extract also exhibited clean color changes with acid and base mediums and could thus be classed as an acid-base indicator. Titration comparisons between using normal acid (HCl) and base (NaOH) solutions were run and compared against the end points seen using Duranta erecta extract to that seen using phenolphthalein and methyl orange. The results confirm the applicability of utilizing Duranta erecta fruit extract as an affordable, non-toxic, and biodegradable substitute for standard synthetic indicators and therefore, an ideal choice for instructional and research laboratory purposes.[12]
