THE ROLE OF DETOX DRINKS IN HEALTH AND WELLNESS: A SCIENTIFIC APPRAISAL

ABSTRACT Detox drinks are widely marketed for weight loss, toxin removal, and improved health, yet scientific evidence supporting these claims is limited. This review critically analyzes the gap between marketing and scientific reality, evaluating common detox drink types—juice cleanses, herbal teas, and supplements. The body's natural detoxification processes, primarily via the liver and kidneys, are robust and generally unaffected by these drinks. While some ingredients may offer minor benefits, claims of enhanced detoxification lack substantiation. Safety concerns, including nutrient deficiencies, medication interactions, and adverse effects, are significant. Marketing often relies on unsubstantiated claims and vague terminology, highlighting a need for stricter regulation. This review recommends prioritizing a balanced diet and hydration over detox drinks, urging caution, especially for vulnerable populations. Future research should focus on rigorous clinical trials, long-term effects, and standardized regulation to provide evidence-based guidance.
