Abstract

INNOVATION IN "SUSTAINED RELEASE DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEM": A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW

Hardeep Kaur, Lovepreet Kaur* and Sanjiv Duggal

ABSTRACT

Sustained release drug delivery systems (SRDDS) enhance the efficacy of medication by releasing drugs over a long period, reducing frequent dosing and side effects. Such systems function well for drugs that act for short durations or have poor solubility, providing constant treatment benefits. Their design relies on drug solubility, molecule size, rate of absorption, and metabolism. Typical strategies involve diffusion-based release, dissolution control, pH-sensitive systems, and osmotic pressure systems, frequently employing polymers. Production techniques like extrusion and granulation form these systems. Advantages are constant drug levels, reduced patient compliance, and fewer side effects. Issues like abrupt release of the drug (dose dumping), patient variation, and laboratory vs. real-world performance disparities persist. For all these obstacles, SRDDS continues to push drug delivery techniques for safer, more effective treatments.

Keywords: Sustained release, Polymers, formulation approaches.
