Mohamed Afsal A.*, Shri Sundharan S., Syed Ali Fathima, Sivaprakash S., Suprraja S. and Gowri Shallini P.

ABSTRACT

The use of seawater for therapeutic purposes, particularly in dermatology, has a long-standing historical and scientific foundation. Thalassotherapy, the practice of using seawater and marine products in therapeutic treatments, has demonstrated notable benefits in managing various skin conditions. This review aims to explore the mechanisms, benefits, and clinical applications of seawater therapy on the skin. It discusses the chemical composition of seawater, its influence on the skin barrier, hydration, inflammation, and microbiome, and its applications in conditions such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and acne. Furthermore, it highlights the synergistic effects of minerals such as magnesium, calcium, and zinc found in seawater. The article also reviews both traditional and contemporary thalassotherapy practices and explores the latest research supporting the efficacy of seawater-based treatments.

Keywords: Thalassotherapy, Seawater, Psoriasis, Acne, Atopic dermatitis, Dermatology.
