Abstract

ROLE OF AYURVEDA IN PUBLIC HEALTH

*Dr. Prarit Goyal and Dr. Krishan Kumar

ABSTRACT

Ayurveda is an ancient holistic medical system that focuses on two main aspects: maintaining the health of a healthy person and treating illnesses in patients. Similarly, the primary goals of public health are disease prevention, treatment, and enhancing the quality of life for individuals. This study aims to explore the relationship between Ayurveda and public health, analyzing their shared objectives. Classical Ayurvedic texts discuss various public health concepts, including infectious diseases, immunity, and nutrition. However, modern research has largely focused on understanding public health through the lens of Ayurveda. This study references Ayurvedic scriptures, contemporary medical literature, research papers, and online sources. Both Ayurveda and public health share the same fundamental goal—promoting well-being. In the modern era, many diseases stem from lifestyle-related disorders, which can be prevented by followingAyurvedic principles. Additionally, Ayurveda offers effective treatments for those already affected. Recent initiatives such as the National Rural Health Mission and Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram have successfully incorporated Ayurvedic principles to address public health challenges. The simple yet effective regimens outlined in classical Ayurvedic texts continue to play a crucial role in addressing contemporary health issues, highlighting Ayurveda’s significant contribution to public health.

Keywords: Ayurveda, Public Health, the quality of life.
