CUBOSOMES: A NEXT-GENERATION DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEM – A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW ON THE STRUCTURE, PREPARATION, COMPOSITION, CHARACTERIZATION AND APPLICATIONS OF CUBOSOMES IN DRUG DELIVERY
Mahanthesh H. M., Anasuya Patil*, Likitha G., Arpitha Nandakumar, Dinesh Shivaraj and Lakshmi Priya N. S.
ABSTRACT Cubosomes are a new type of nanostructured lipid-based carrier with a cubic liquid crystalline phase that presents a viable platform for drug delivery. These self-assembled nanocarriers have a distinct bicontinuous structure made of lipid bilayers and aqueous channels, allowing for the encapsulation of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic medicines. Their biocompatibility, prolonged release qualities, and capacity to increase drug solubility make them excellent candidates for pharmaceutical and biological applications. This review investigates the composition, structural properties, and manufacturing methods of cubosomes, with a particular emphasis on their significance in drug delivery. Various preparation techniques, including top-down and bottom-up approaches, are explored, as well as the important parameters that influence their stability. They interaction with biological membranes is also discussed, as is their potential for targeted and regulated medication release. The use of cubosomes in oral, transdermal, ophthalmic, and parenteral drug delivery is highlighted with an emphasis on their advantages over traditional delivery techniques. Furthermore, the paper discusses present problems, such as formulation stability and large-scale production, and suggests future possibilities for enhancing cubosome-based drug delivery. Overall, ensures a smart and adaptable nanocarrier technology with great potential for improving treatment outcomes. Continued study in this field may result in novel formulations with higher bioavailability, fewer side effects, and greater patient acceptance. Keywords: cubosomes, bicontinuous cubic phase, drug delivery system, controlled release, targeted drug delivery, sustained drug delivery. [Download Article] [Download Certifiate] |
