ABSTRACT Background: Tuberculosis (TB), an infectious deadly disease caused by the various species of Mycobacterium, especially Mycobacterium tuberculosis, was emerged from East Africa more than three million years ago. According to World Health Organization (WHO), TB is the second most fatal disease after HIV, accountable for human death across the globe and about one third of human population is estimated to be infected with M. tuberculosis. Objectives: The main objective of the present study was to perform pharmacognostic evaluation and to screen scientifically the anti-tubercular and anti-microbial activities of alcoholic (PDEE) and aqueous bark extracts (PDAE) of Pithecellobium dulce linn. Methods: The pharmacognostic evaluation was carried out for Morphology of bark followed by determination of proximate values. Anti-microbial activity was carried out against bacillus cereus, candida albicans determined by minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) method. Anti-Bacterial activity was carried out against Escherichia coli, bacillus cereus determined by agar-well diffusion method. Anti-fungal activity was also carried out against C.Albians. Results: Preliminary phytochemical investigations revealed the presence of Glycosides flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, carbohydrates, steroids and proteins. Various proximate values for the bark of Pithecellobium dulce linn were performed and were found to be, moisture content (3.43%), alcohol soluble extractive value (9.78%), water soluble extractive value (8.36%), total ash (5.5%), acid insoluble ash (1.17%), water soluble ash (2.67%), sulphated ash (8.33%) Conclusion: It may be concluded that the administration of aqueous and ethanolic bark extracts of Pithecellobium dulce linn showed potential anti-tubercular, anti-microbial and anti-fungal activity at different concentrations. Keywords: Pithecellobium dulce, Preliminary phytochemical, Anti-tubercular activity, Anti-microbial activity, Anti-fungal activity. [Download Article] [Download Certifiate] |
