REVIEW ON MUCOADEHSIVE MICROSPHERES: A NOVEL DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEM
Vikas B. M.*, Mohammad Ali and Parthiban S.
ABSTRACT Microspheres are an important part of the novel drug delivery system due to their small size and efficient carrying capacity. Because of their extended residence time, Bio-adhesive properties like mucoadhesion can be combined with microspheres to create mucoadhesive microspheres. Bio-adhesion can be defined as a state in which two materials, at least one of which is biological in nature, are kept together for an extended length of time using interfacial forces. Microspheres are a carrier-linked drug delivery system with particle sizes ranging from 1 to 1000μm. They have a drug core and polymer coating on the outer layers. Mucoadhesive microspheres have several advantages, including efficient absorption and improved bioavailability of drugs due to a high surface to volume ratio, much closer contact with the mucus layer, controlled and sustained release of drugs from dosage forms, and precise targeting of drugs to the absorption site. The current study seeks to provide an overview of many features of mucoadhesive microspheres, including the methods for preparing them, the method of evaluation, and their drug delivery applications. Keywords: Microsphere, Mucoadhesion, Particle size, Drug targeting, Controlled release, Sustain release. [Download Article] [Download Certifiate] |
