Annapoorna B.S.*, Sowjanya J. and Srinivasa S.

ABSTRACT

The aging process is accompanied by various physiological and psychological challenges, which often lead to a decline in the overall quality of life. Contemporary medicine has made significant strides in geriatric care. Ayurveda, an ancient system of medicine from India, offers a holistic and integrative approach to address the complexities of aging. This review explores the Ayurvedic perspective on gerontology, focusing on its preventive, curative and rejuvenative strategies. Key Ayurvedic principles such as Prakruti, Agni, Dosha, Dhatu, Bala and Ojas are integral to maintaining balance and promoting health in older adults. The application of Ayurvedic therapies by means of Shamana (Pallative), Shodhana (Purificatory), Rasayana (Rejuvenative) and Pathya (Dietary modifications) offers potential benefits in managing age-related conditions. By emphasizing the importance of personalized care and lifestyle modifications, Ayurveda offers a comprehensive framework for promoting healthy aging. The existing literature synthesizes on Ayurvedic practices in geriatric care, highlighting both traditional approaches and contemporary clinical studies. Thus, the potential integration of Ayurvedic methods into modern geriatric care models to improve quality of life for elderly populations.
