Abstract

PHYTOPHARMACEUTICALS: A NEW CLASS OF DRUGS IN INDIA

Anamika Yadav*, Vani Madaan, Ashok Kumar Sharma, Tarun Pokariyal and Mukesh Sharma

ABSTRACT

Phytopharmaceuticals are a novel category of plant-derived drugs that integrate the benefits of traditional herbal remedies with modern scientific advancements. These drugs are formulated from plant materials and undergo rigorous scientific validation to ensure their therapeutic effectiveness, safety, and consistency. Unlike conventional herbal products, phytopharmaceuticals are standardized and tested through clinical trials, offering a reliable alternative to synthetic medications.  In India, where traditional medicinal practices such as Ayurveda have long emphasized the use of plants for healing, the rise of phytopharmaceuticals represents a promising intersection between ancient wisdom and contemporary medicine. India’s rich biodiversity provides a unique resource for developing such drugs, and the country's growing interest in phytopharmaceuticals reflects a broader global trend toward natural healthcare solutions. This article examines the role of phytopharmaceuticals in India, exploring their development, applications, and the challenges involved in research, standardization, and regulatory approval. The potential of these plant-based drugs to treat chronic conditions, such as diabetes and arthritis, is discussed, alongside key examples like Curcumin, Ashwagandha, and Guggul, which have garnered attention for their therapeutic properties. The article also addresses the regulatory landscape and the future prospects of phytopharmaceuticals in both the Indian and global markets. With increasing consumer preference for natural alternatives to pharmaceutical drugs, phytopharmaceuticals are positioned to play an important role in transforming global healthcare. India's blend of traditional knowledge and modern scientific research places it at the forefront of this rapidly expanding sector.
