ABSTRACT

Background: Age-related losses in bone mineral density, muscle strength, balance and gait have been linked to an increased risk of falls, fracture’s and disabilities, but few prospective studies have compared the timing rate and pattern of changes in each of these measures in middle- aged and older men and women. This is important so that targeted strategies can be developed to optimize specific musculoskeletal and functional performance measures in older adults. Aim: The main aim of the study is to assess the lifestyle modifications regarding bone health in elderly people to improve patient quality of life. Materials and Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted for a period of 6 months during the year 2023 – 2024 at Andhra Pradesh vaidhya vidhana parishad hospital or District Government hospital, proddatur. A specially designed proforma was used for collecting data. Results: In this prospective study a total of 120 patients were participated. Out of 120 patients demographic details shown that males are predominant than females. Out of 120 patients 64[53%] are male and 56 [46%] are female. Among 120 patients 29 [24.16%] patients were highly observed with low bone density of age group 31-40 years. Our study results show that out of 120 patients 29 [24.16%] were highly affected with low bone density of weight in between 51 – 70 kg. Out of 120 patients 71 [59%] were highly affected with low bone density of height in between 5.1-5.5 feet and 36 [30%] patients were moderately affected with low bone density of height in between 5.6-6.0 feet. Conclusion: Bone is strongly influenced by the intake of several nutrients and vitamins e.g. calcium, protein, phosphorus, magnesium, vitamin D, and fluoride are important in bone health. Legumes and whole grain Products provide phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, zinc, copper, and vitamin K. In addition beef, fish, or poultry, nuts and seeds are good Source of protein, zinc, magnesium, and iron for males and females. Based on the results of the study, consumption of vitamin D fortified food significantly increase vitamin d levels .Therefore, well balanced and adequate nutrition, physical activity should be ensured in order to prevent adverse effects on bone health.
