ORAL FOAM TABLETS: BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN CONVENTIONAL TABLETS AND ENHANCED DRUG DELIVERY
Parthiban S. and Anupama H.B.*
ABSTRACT Advanced formulations known as foam-based drug delivery systems are intended to improve the effectiveness and absorption of pharmaceuticals. Oral foam tablets represent an innovative drug delivery system that combines the benefits of effervescence and foam formation to enhance drug dispersion and absorption. These tablets rapidly disintegrate upon contact with saliva, producing a stable foam that facilitates easy swallowing, making them ideal for pediatric and geriatric patients. The formulation typically includes foaming agents, disintegrants, and active pharmaceutical ingredients to ensure rapid action and improved bioavailability. Their unique texture enhances patient compliance and acceptance compared to conventional solid dosage forms. Mechanistically, the effervescent reaction aids in foam generation, while mucoadhesive properties can prolong retention time in the oral cavity. Key formulation challenges include optimizing foam stability, drug release profiles, and taste masking. Recentadvancements focus on novel excipients and manufacturing techniques to improve formulation efficiency. Regulatory considerations emphasize safety, efficacy, and patient acceptability. This review discusses the formulation strategies, benefits, challenges, and future prospects of oral foam tablets in pharmaceutical 71422.
