PHARMACOGNOSTICAL STUDY OF SEED OF JYOTISHMATI (CELASTRUS PANICULATUS WILLD.)

ABSTRACT

Background: The present article reveals the Pharmacognosy study of seed of Jyotishmati (Celastrus paniculatus Willd.). Material & Method: Pharmacognostical studies was carried out to supplement the necessary information for the systematic identification of this plant. Observation & Result: The macroscopical characters of the seed is Varying size, approx 1 cm length and 1 cm in breadth, three sided being convex on the sides and a few two sided with one convex and other more or less flat side and reddish orange in color. In microscopic studies the presence of well-defined epidermis covered externally with thick cuticle, Aleurone grains, Prismatic crystals of calcium oxalate, Palisade and Fixed oil are found. In powder microscopy studies presence of oil globules, fragment of endosperm filled with oil globules, starch and aleurone grains, vessels, prismatic crystal and fragment of embryo are found. Conclusion: The structures which areobserved in this study, helps in correct identification of Jyotishmati (Celastrus paniculatus Willd.) seed.
