THE LEISHMANIASIS INFECTION CASES AT OIL HOSPITAL, TRIPOLI, LIBYA

ABSTRACT Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease caused by Leishmania species and transmitted through the bite of infected female Phlebotomus sandflies. In Tripoli, Libya, leishmaniasis, particularly cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), is a significant public health concern. The primary causative agent in the region is Leishmania major, with Leishmania tropica also reported. Several factors contribute to the prevalence of leishmaniasis in Tripoli, including environmental changes, urbanization, climate conditions, and the presence of reservoir hosts such as rodents and stray dogs. Poor waste management and increased human-sand-fly contact further exacerbate disease transmission. Understanding the epidemiology and risk factors of leishmaniasis in Tripoli is crucial for implementing effective prevention and control measures, including vector control, public awareness, and improved healthcareinterventions. In gender, male patients are 64% and female patients are 36%. In number of tumors almost affected in Males and the age group should be most affected in adult (60-80) for the patients’ 30%. Then the calculated Libyan and non-Libyan people compared to Libyan, most affected is 94%. Rural and Urban residence also compared to lowest level of rural people affected. Diagnostic yield of Microscopy, the affected cases are in highest percentage of 40% and the profession of Contractor and workers mostly affected among cases. Keywords: Leishmaniasis, L. tropica, L.
