OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH RISKS & INNOVATIONS IN AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY: A REVIEW

ABSTRACT Occupational hazards, incidents that occur in the workplace, are more prevalent in industrialized developing countries and can lead to severe health issues and significant losses. Occupational diseases arise from exposure to harmful chemicals or hazards during employment, adversely affecting health. Occupational health practices aim to ensure worker safety and well-being across all occupations. The International Labour Organisation (ILO) reports that annually, 2.3 million people globally die from work-related accidents or diseases, equating to over 6000 deaths daily, alongside 340 million occupational accidents and 160 million work-related illnesses. The automotive industry workers’ face hazards from chemicals like heavy metals, solvents, and asbestos, leading to chronic poisoning, respiratory issues, and cancers. 85% of Indian workers being in the unorganized sector is a major cause ofoccupational hazards. India stands at the 5th place in automotive industry with a massive turnover of 2.2 trillion euros (185 trillion Rs. approximately). This article focuses on the development of the automotive industry, occupational health risks in this industry due to chemicals, its occupational hazards & about automotive waste. Besides this, it highlighten the innovations in this industry & how these innovations reduce health risk to the workers.
