OVERVIEW ON BIOPOLYMERIC COMPOSITE FIBERS FOR WOUND HEALING APPLICATIONS
Sarika S. Lokhande*, Savita S. More, Vijay N. Raje and Poonam K. Patil
ABSTRACT Wound healing is a multi-factorial physiological process that helps to make the body the imperative barrier from the external environment in the growth of new tissue. This phenomenon's ambiguity makes it vulnerable to many irregularities. Wound healing occurs in the body as a normal biological inherent process that is reaped through four highly defined programmed stages such as hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodelling, and these stages take place in the adequate progression. For the development of nanofibers and microfibers in wound healing, various biopolymers are documented that can be used as therapeutic drug delivery for wound healing applications. To augment and maintain these cascades; an all-natural matrix system is proposed. Biocompatible biopolymers were employedto prepare microfibers via ionotropic or extrusion-gelation into a physical crosslinking solution. Initially we have prepared cuurcumin loaded composite fibers as wound dressing. Curcumin, an antiinflammatory, anti-oxidant and wound healing agent, was loaded into the fibers as a natural bioactive.
