ABSTRACT

Drug Utilization Review (DUR) is a structured evaluation of prescribing, dispensing, and medication use to ensure effective, safe, and economical drug therapy. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, necessitating the rational use of medications for optimal patient outcomes. This study aims to assess the prescribing patterns, appropriateness, and effectiveness of drug utilization in cardiac patients in a tertiary care hospital. It seeks to identify potential drug interactions, adverse drug reactions (ADRs), and adherence to standard treatment guidelines. A prospective observational study was conducted in the cardiology department of a tertiary care hospital. Data on demographics, diagnosis, prescribed medications, and clinical outcomes were collected and analyzed using WHO prescribing indicators and other DUR parameters. The findings highlighted the common classes of drugs prescribed, including anti hypertensives, anti platelets, statins, and anticoagulants. The incidence of inappropriate prescribing, druginteractions, and ADRs was also analyzed. The study emphasizes the importance of regular DUR in cardiac patients to optimize therapy, reduce medication-related problems, and improve patient outcomes. Strengthening adherence to prescribing guidelines and implementing pharmacist-led interventions can enhance the quality of cardiac care in tertiary hospitals.
