Abstract

FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF HERBAL HAIR DYE GEL

Vaishnavi D. A.*, Aneena Alphons, Ansa A., Mrs. Smitha Raj R.S.

ABSTRACT

Conventional hair colouring methods utilize chemicals, which can occasionally be harmful to human health. They result in skin irritation, hair damage, and discomfort. When compared to chemical hair colours, herbal-based hair dyes have numerous benefits. Large numbers of people prefer herbal-based hair dyes because of many benefits they provide over chemical-based ones. The goal of the current study was to formulate and evaluate herbal hair dye gel using Nephelium lappaceum (Rambutan), Lawsonia inermis (Henna), Camellia sinensis (Black tea), and Aloe barbadensis (Aloe Vera). The gel was formulated using a combination of these herbal extracts, carbopol-940, glycerin, methyl paraben, triethanolamine and distilled water. Physicochemical properties, such as pH, viscosity, and texture, were evaluated. The gel's colouring effect, wash fastness was also assessed. Results showed that the formulated gel exhibited a pH range of 6.5-7.0, suitable for hair care products. The gel demonstrated a good colouring effect, with a colour retention rate of 70-80% after five washes. This herbal hair dye gel formulation boosts hair health and colour without affecting the skin, and also provides a safe, natural and reliable substitute for synthetic hair dyes.

Keywords: Hair dye, Nephelium lappaceum, Lawsonia inermis, Camellia sinensis, Aloe barbadensis, Carbapol 940.
