Abstract

A REVIEW ON NATURAL PIGMENTS AND DYES

Ramya Madhiri*, T. Sai Priya, Shaik Abdulrazak, N. Gayathri Reddy and Nafiya Tabassum

ABSTRACT

Dyes and pigments contribute significantly to the aesthetic appeal of our world. Their usage dates back to ancient times, playing a crucial role across various sectors, including food, textiles, and cosmetics. Initially, natural dyes were the sole option available for coloring fabrics; however, the introduction of the first synthetic dye in 1856 shifted this reliance towards synthetic alternatives. Synthetic dyes are often more effective and environmentally friendly, with fewer side effects. Nevertheless, concerns have arisen regarding the carcinogenic properties of synthetic food colorants, prompting a search for safer alternatives, such as plant-based pigments. These pigments provide the colors we encounter in our daily lives, with plants serving as the primary source. Natural dyes can be extracted from various natural materials, including roots, leaves, and the secretions of animals, insects, and fungi. Regulating the use of synthetic colors while promoting natural food colorants holds promise for improved health outcomes. This review article discusses the structures, classifications, and applications of these dyes and pigments.

Keywords: Natural dyes, Synthetic dye, Eco-friendly, Colorants, Pigments, Carcinogenic, Textiles.
