UNDERSTANDING HYPOTHYROIDISM THROUGH THE LENS OF AYURVEDA

ABSTRACT Hypothyroidism or underactive thyroid is a common endocrinal disorder seen all over the world. It is a clinical syndrome resulting from insufficient production of thyroid hormones. The global incidence of Hypothyroidism is increasing alarmingly. It is more prevalent among females. Also, the affected person has to remain dependent on hormonal replacement therapy throughout his/her life. So, there so, there is an increasing demand to understand the disease according to Ayurveda and to establish its management through Ayurveda as well. On reviewing the clinical presentation of Hypothyroidism from classical texts; it is found that there is Hypofunctioning of Jatharagni and Dhatwagni also the involvement of Ama is present. Kapha Vriddhi associated with Pitta Dushti and Margavaranajanya Vata Prakopa isseen. Rasa and Meda dhatu is predominately affected. Also, Rasavaha and Medovaha Srotodushti is predominately seen. Dosha-dushyasammoorchhana in various Dhatus results is the systemic manifestation of the disease. Therefore, the required line of treatment should involve Deepana, Pachana, Srotoshodhana and Kapha vata shamaka chikitsa. Keywords: Hypothyroidism, Agnimandya, Deepana, Pachana, Srotoshodhana.
