FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF ZOLPIDEM BUCCAL TABLETS
A. Vibhavari*, Muralidhar Rao Akkaladevi, M. Bhargavi and G. Vijaya Sindhuri
ABSTRACT Zolpidem is a nonbenzodiazepine drug which acts as a sedative and hypnotic. Zolpidem is a GABA receptor agonist of the imidazopyridine class. It works by increasing GABA effects in the central nervous system by binding to GABA receptors at the same location as benzodiazepines. Zolpidem, sold under the brand name Ambien, among others, is a medication primarily used for the short-term treatment of sleeping problems. The mucoadhesive buccal tablets of zolpidem were prepared by direct compression method by using natural polymers like guar gum and xanthum gum. After examining the flow properties of the powder blends the results were found to be within prescribed limits and indicated good flowing property, hence it was subjected to compression. The prepared tablets were evaluated for post compression parameters. All the evaluation parameters given the positive result and comply the standards. The results indicated that the mucoadhesive buccal tablets of zolpidem was the good choice to bypass extensive first pass metabolism with an improvement in bioavailabity of zolpidem through buccal mucosa.
