ANTI – OXIDANT EFFECT OF VIMALA BHASMA: AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY

Dr. Swarna Y.* and Dr. Laxmi B. Kurle

ABSTRACT

Background: Oxidative stress is a crucial factor that causes metabolic and physiological alteration and various diseases of the organism. It usually results in increased Reactive oxygen species in turn which hyper activate signaling pathways that promote inflammation, cancer and cell death leading to an accelerated aging phenotype. Rasayana chikitsa is considered one among the Ashtanga ayurveda, which nourishes rasadi saptadhatu and strengthens the deha, indriya, smriti, vaksiddhi, kanti, prabha etc. Helps in maintaining health leading to deeraghayu, promotes digestion, metabolism, microcirculation and tissue perfusion. Materials and Method: The test drug- Vimala Bhasma, was prepared by using shodhita Vimala, Gandhaka, and haratala, followed by trituration with nimbu swarasa and subjected to Gaja puta. The antioxidant activity of Vimala Bhasma was investigated in middle and old age Wistar albino rats with gritha as anupana. The study parameters included body weight, anthropometrymeasurements, open field test, rotarod test, forced swimming, lipid peroxidation, catalase and protein estimation of brain was studied. Results and Conclusion: Shodhita Vimala, gandaka, hartala were used for the prepration of vimala bhasma as shodhana is essential intermediary pharmaceutical process used for purification of metal and minerals. Yield of vimala bhasma was 73%. This study yielded significant results in anthropometry measurements, forced swimming, rotarod test, lipid peroxidatation, catalase activity, protein estimation of middle aged group, and also Significant improvements were observed in old age group. Vimala Bhasma having atirasayana and vrshya property contributes to its antioxidant activity.

Keywords: Vimala bhasma, Iron pyrite, oxidative stress, Anti-Oxindant.
