KSHARA KARMA- A CRITICAL REVIEW
Basant Mohan Negi* and Prof. (Dr.) Ajay Kumar Gupta
ABSTRACT Shalya Tantra, the surgical branch of Ayurveda, incorporates various tools and procedures, among which Kshara is a unique therapeutic equipment with extensive applications. Recognized for its dual classification as both an Upayantra and Anushastra, Kshara demonstrates significant potential in surgical and parasurgical interventions. Comprising primarily inorganic potassium salts like potassium carbonate and potassium sulfate, Kshara exhibits Tridoshaghna properties and performs unique actions, viz. Chhedana, Bhedana, and Lekhana. Its alkali-driven mechanisms, including protein hydrolysis and tissue dehydration, contribute to its therapeutic efficacy. Historically, similar alkaline preparations have been employed across civilizations for medical and industrial purposes. Kshara's versatile actions—ranging from wound cleansing and haemostasis to managing parasitic and fungal infections—highlight its value. However, caution is imperative, as improper or prolonged use can have detrimental effects, including tissue damage and harm to male fertility. This review explores the Kshara Karma, its mode of action according to Ayurveda backed up by modern scientific evidence. Keywords: Kshara, Shalya Tantra, Alkali, Chemical burns.
