ANTIHYPERLIPIDEMIC ACTIVITY OF METHANOLIC EXTRACT OF HORDEUM VULGARE SEEDS IN TRITON (ACUTE) AND HIGH CHOLESTEROL DIET (CHRONIC) INDUCED RATS
*Sadia Raoof and Mohd. Abdul Rahman
ABSTRACT Hyperlipidemia is an abnormally high level of fatty substances calledlipids, largely cholesterol and triglycerides, in the blood. The presentstudy highlights the anti-hyperlipidemic activity of Methanolic extractof seeds of Hordeum vulgare (Barley) preparation in cholesterol dietand triton-induced hyperlipidemia in rats. Hyperlipidemia wasdeveloped in Rattus norvegicus (Albino Rats), which were randomlydivided into seven groups of six animals each; feeding with acholesterol diet (chronic model) and triton (acute model) for 30 days.Group 1 received a normal diet. Group 2 received a cholesterol diet(AD) which served as control. Group 3 served as control tritoninduced, Group 4 served as standard and received 50 mg/kg ofatorvastatin post oral along with cholesterol diet, group 5 served as astandard which received atorvastatin 50 mg/kg post oral along withtriton (I.P). Groups 6 and 7 were administered with methanolic extract of seeds of Hordeumvulgare preparation (200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg) along with cholesterol diet and tritonrespectively. Serum lipid profiles were estimated for all Rats on the last day of theexperiment. The results were analyzed statistically using analysis of variance (ANOVA).Methanolic extract of seeds of Hordeum vulgare preparation reduced the raised serum levelof total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL, and VLDL. It increased the serum HDL levelcompared to the control group. Keywords: Atherogenic Diet; Hyperlipidemia; Atorvastatin; Hordeum vulgare. [Download Article] [Download Certifiate] |
