Dnyaneshwar Saswade*, Pankaj Tonde, Balaji Jadhav, Asif Mulani

ABSTRACT

Phocomelia, a rare and debilitating congenital disorder, is characterized by the underdevelopment or absence of limbs, resulting in profound physical and emotional challenges for affected individuals. This research aims to delve into the far-reaching consequences of phocomelia on the human body, encompassing musculoskeletal, neurological, and psychological aspects. Furthermore, it seeks to identify effective result, emphasizing the role of genetic counseling, prenatal screening, and maternal health education. A comprehensive analysis of literature reveals that phocomelia can lead to impaired mobility, chronic pain, and decreased quality of life. However, proactive measures such as folic acid supplementation, avoidance of teratogenic substances, and timely medical intervention can significantly mitigate the risk of phocomelia. This research underscores the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to addressing the complex needs of individuals with phocomelia, while emphasizing the need for increased awareness and preventive measures to minimize its occurrence. The findings of this research have significant implications for healthcare professionals, policymakers, and individuals affected by phocomelia, highlighting the need for increased awareness, improved preventive measures, and enhanced support services for affected individuals and their families.

Keywords: Phocomelia, limb, musculoskeletal, neurological, and psychological aspects.
