Abstract

A REVIEW ARTICLE ON TRADITIONAL HERBAL MEDICINES FOR CHRONIC DISEASES

*Sakshi S. Bedare, Nitin B. Kohale and Harigopal S. Sawarkar

ABSTRACT

Chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, cancer, and autoimmune conditions are among the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. While conventional medicine plays a crucial role in managing these diseases, limitations such as adverse side effects, high costs, and incomplete efficacy have led to growing interest in traditional herbal medicines (THMs). Rooted in ancient healing systems like Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and Unani medicine, THMs offer holistic approaches that address the underlying causes of chronic illnesses. This review explores the historical foundations, mechanisms of action, and clinical applications of herbal remedies in the management of chronic diseases. Key herbs, including turmeric, garlic, ginseng, and bitter melon, demonstrate significant therapeutic potential through anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties. Additionally, the article highlights challenges in standardization, safety, and quality control while advocating for the integration of herbal medicine into modern healthcare. By bridging the gap between traditional knowledge and contemporary science, THMs hold promise as complementary therapies for improving long-term health outcomes in patients with chronic conditions.

Keywords: Chronic diseases, Herbal medicines, Traditional knowledge, THM’s.
