Dr. Ayushi D. Jayswal*, Dr. Naresh B. Chaudhary, Dr. Nikita Patir and Prof. V. K. Kori

ABSTRACT

Ayurveda is the ancient science of healing. Various Ayurvedic classics describe Mukhadushika in the context of Kshudra Roga. It is also called that because it mainly affects the area of the face. In modern science, it can be correlated with Acne vulgaris, which is one of the most common skin-care problems for people around the world. This condition is commonly found in puberty and 80-90% of teenagers and young adults are affected by it. That’s why it is also known as ‘Yauvanapidika’ or ‘Tarunyapidika.’ It is not a life-threatening condition but has a significant impact on the quality of life of every individual because it mostly affects the age, which has its own charm. Acne vulgaris is an infection of the pilosebaceous follicles, characterised by non-inflammatory (white and black heads) and inflammatory (papules, pustules, nodules) lesions. Though it mainly affects teenagers and young adults undergoing hormonal changes, many people continue struggling with Acne into their 20s, 30s, and beyond. It mainly affects age when the person is more concerned about appearance and beauty. In this era, every member of society is eager to establish a unique identity. Any kind of skin disorder, minor or major, that has direct involvement in the aesthetic aspect of a person has a serious impact on physical, psychological, personal, and social life as well. A person's face reflects their personality. It is saying that “Face is the index of mind.” It reflects all the expressions. Mukhadushika has been described in various Ayurvedic literatures as Sushruta Samhita, Ashtanga Hridaya, Bhavaprakash, Chakrapani, Sharangdhara Samhita, Yogaratnakar and Bhaisajya Ratnavali among the Kshudra Roga. Acharyas have mentioned Vata, Rakta and Kapha Dosha to be the causative factors of it. The management of Mukhadushika involves the use of both Shodhana and Shamana therapy, along with a variety of Lepas. Therefore, this review article attempts to explain the Mukhadushika in detail as mentioned in Ayurvedic and modern literatures.
