EXPLORING THE THERAPEUTIC POTENTIAL OF JAMBU (SYZYGIUM CUMINI SKEELS ) FORMULATIONS IN AYURVEDIC TEXTS: INSIGHTS FOR DRUG DEVELOPMENT

ABSTRACT Jambu (Syzygium cumini Skeels.) is part of the Myrtaceae family and is recognized as a promising medicinal plant, effectively utilized for its therapeutic benefits across a variety of health issues. Multiple formulations of Jambu, such as Kvatha, Taila, Ghrita, Lepa, and Churna have been employed in the treatment of conditions like Raktatisara, Atiartava, Pandu, Prameha and others. The objective of this study is to examine the usage patterns of Jambu-based formulations as referenced in 11 classical Ayurvedic texts. This review has revealed that Kvatha, Churna and Taila are the most frequently utilized formulations and delves into the wide-ranging therapeutic formulations of Jambu as recorded in traditional Ayurvedic literature. Therefore, this review provides researchers with an understanding of the potential alterations in drug development related to Jambu that have not yet been scientifically investigated.
