ABSTRACT

Aim: The aim of the study was to compare the efficacy of vitamin D3 in solid dosage form versus vitamin D3 liquid dosage form versus placebo in fibromyalgia (FM). Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted at a secondary care hospital in India over six months. A total 150 patients aged between 11-70 years, diagonised with fibromyalgia were included. Group A received placebo (calcium), Group B received Vitamin D3 (solid) & Group C received Vitamin D3 (liquid). Polysymptomatic distress score was calculated before & after treatment to show symptomatic improvement and Vitamin D3 levels were also analysed before treatment and after treatment. Results: The pre operative PSD score was reduced from 16.84±3.40 to 11±2.60 in Group A, 17.4 ±3.40 to 5.1±1.95 in Group B and 16.96±3.33 to 3.2±1.81 in Group C and the reduction was found to be statistically significant (P <0.05). Similarly, Vitamin D3 levels were improved from 18.78 ± 8.29 to 26.46 ± 7.35 in Group A, 19.99 ± 8.81 to 40.6 ±9.95 in Group B and 19.97± 46.82 to 46.82 ± 9.93 in Group C and the improvement was found to be statistically significant (P<0.05). Conclusion: By performing this study, we can conclude that Vitamin D3 supplementation has shown significant therapeutic benefits in the management of Fibromyalgia & comparatively liquid dosage form was more efficacious than solid dosage form.
