Abstract

A CONCISE REVIEW ON EXTRUSION-SPHERONIZATION TECHNOLOG-AS A NOVEL METHOD OF PELLETIZATION

ABSTRACT

When compared to the oral single unit dosage forms multi-particulate drug-delivery systems like pellets and granules offers biopharmaceutical benefits in terms of a more uniform and predictable drug distribution and transportation in the enteric system. Various pelletization and granulation techniques are available for preparation of granules or drug loaded particles which are of spherical shape and includes Extrusion Spheronization as one of the widely used technique among them in the manufacture of beads and also pellets. Extrusion-Spheronization process is the utmost employed technique as it offers the greatest benefit to incorporate elevated quantities of active pharmaceutical ingredient, without producing large particle of the drug-loaded pellets apart from also being more efficient than the other techniques for producing pellets. Restrictions related to bioavailability and site specific drug delivery can be overcome by this technique. Extrusion- spheronization is the extensively used method for producingmulti-particulate systems, like pellets and beads, for providing sustained and controlled release or modified release drug delivery. This review outlines regarding the extrusion-spheronization process along with its applications in the field of pharmaceutical industry.
