PHARMACOLOGICAL MANAGEMENT OF HYPERTENSIVE EMERGENCY IN SELECTED HOSPITAL OF KATHMANDU, NEPAL

ABSTRACT Introduction: High blood pressure (hypertension) is a common condition in which the long-term force of the blood against the artery walls is high enough that it may eventually cause health problems, such as MI and stroke. Objectives: The main objective of the study was to study the drug management pattern and medical cost estimation in patient suffering from hypertensive emergency. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted in Norvic International Hospital, Kathmandu. Data collection form included recordings of demographics, symptoms, costs and prescription pattern in hypertensive condition. The collected data was entered separately assigning the respective labeling and values in MS-excel. Result And Conclusion: The study conducted at Norvic International Hospital (NIH) showed that the age group mostly affected from hypertensive emergency was 70-80 years which consist more of male population. The common symptoms were found to be tightness of chest, buzzing ofear and headache. Diuretics were the most commonly used drug in hypertension. Aspirin, bisoprolol, rosuvastatin were other drugs prescribed in combination for the management of hypertensive crises. Cost of emergency drugs must be subsidized by the government aiming the general population of country. Keywords: hypertensive crisis, prescription pattern, Diuretics.
