Amany I. Ahmed, Ahmed E. Abdel Moneim*, Shaima S. Ramadan and Mohga S. Abdalla

ABSTRACT

Coffee is a popular beverage that is widely consumed around the globe. It contains the phenolic component chlorogenic Acid (CGA). Green coffee primarily contains CGA, which is lost during roasting. CGA is a polyphenol molecule found in high concentrations in many plants, including green coffee beans. CGA is linked to several health advantages, including anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, antioxidant, antidiabetic, and anti-cancer properties. It is believed that CGA plays important functions in regulating glucose and lipid metabolism and related disorders like diabetes, cancer, and hepatic steatosis. CGA has unique qualities that combat oxidative stress by scavenging free radicals, serving as a metal chelator, lowering lipid peroxidation, and suppressing NAD (P) H oxidase activity. The present study aimed to investigate the potential effect of green coffee extract on the heart.Wistar male albino rats were administered green coffee extract (200mg/kg/day) for three weeks by oral gavage. The results revealed that, the rats treated with the green coffee extract showed non significant changes in the levels of cardiac injury markers (CK, CK-MB, LDH) as compared to the control group, which indicating that green coffee extract at 200mg/kg b. w. is safe and has no toxic effect. In conclusion, the present study confirmed that the green coffee extract doesn’t have any cardiac toxicity, so it is safe to get it in our lifestyle.

Keywords: green coffee extract, heart, cardiac toxicity, antidiabetic, anticancer, anti-inflammatory.
