AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF TUNDIKERI (CHRONIC TONSILITIS) – A CASE REPORT
Dr. Supriya G.* and Dr. S. M. Pasha
ABSTRACT Tundikeri is a mukharoga mentioned by our acharyas and is named due to its appearance. It is described as a type of Shotha (Inflammation) that resembles the fruit of the Vanakarpasa plant, occurring at the junction of the jawbone (Hanusandhi) or the base of the palate (Talu moola). Acharya Sushrutha has mentioned Tundikeri under Talugata vyadhi whereas Acharya Vagbhata has mentioned it under Kantagata vyadhi. Symptoms of Tundikeri are said to resemble those of tonsillitis, a common condition in ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) and paediatric practice. A case report is presented of a 9-year-old male child who was experiencing difficulty breathing, choking at night, and snoring for two years, and had a history of chronic tonsillitis. Relief was previously obtained from modern medications, but the child experienced repeated attacks of the condition. The effective management of Tundikeri is addressed using Ayurvedic treatments, including Bheshaja (Medicine) and Ksharakarma (A therapeutic procedure involving alkali application). In this case report, the successful management of Tundikeri using Ayurvedic treatments is being reported. Keywords: Children, Chronic tonsillitis, Tundikeri, Apamarga kshara, Amritarishta.
