NUTRACEUTICALS: BRIDGING NUTRITION AND MEDICINE FOR OPTIMAL HEALTH
Jessica, Jasnoor Kaur Cheema, Jatin Singh and Arvinder Kaur
ABSTRACT Nutraceuticals, a fusion of “nutrition” and “pharmaceutical,” are bioactive compounds derived from natural sources such as plants, animals, and microorganisms, which provide health benefits beyond basic nutrition. These products, including vitamins, minerals, herbal extracts, probiotics, and functional foods, play a critical role in promoting health, preventing diseases, and supporting body functions. Nutraceuticals are increasingly recognized for their ability to prevent and manage chronic conditions like cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, and even neurodegenerative disorders. Plant-based nutraceuticals have garnered significant attention due to their wide range of therapeutic properties. Phytochemical’s, such as flavonoids, carotenoids, and polyphenols found in fruits, vegetables, and herbs, exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-carcinogenic effects. For example, turmeric’s active compound, curcumin, is known for its potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits, widely used in managing joint health and reducing the risk of cancer. Similarly, garlic extract is valued for its cardiovascular benefits, including cholesterol reduction and blood pressure regulation. In addition to plants, animal-derived nutraceuticals like omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil and collagen peptides also offer immense health benefits, supporting heart health, joint mobility, and skin elasticity. Probiotics, beneficial bacteria derived from various sources, contribute to gut health by maintaining the balance of the intestinal microbiota, thereby enhancing immunity and digestion. While nutraceuticals hold great promise, they face challenges in terms of standardisation, regulation, and bioavailability. The lack of stringent regulatory oversight in many regions leads to variations in product quality and efficacy. However, ongoing research and advancements in nutraceutical formulations are addressing these concerns, enhancing their therapeutic potential. Keywords: . [Download Article] [Download Certifiate] |
