NOROVIRUS: A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW

ABSTRACT Norovirus is one of the leading causes of acute gastroenteritis globally, affecting millions of individuals annually. This highly contagious virus causes significant morbidity and mortality, particularly in vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. It is responsible for substantial healthcare costs and economic losses due to outbreaks in various settings, including healthcare facilities, schools, and cruise ships. Norovirus is notable for its genetic diversity, environmental stability, and resistance to many standard disinfection methods, posing unique challenges for prevention and control. This review article explores the virology, epidemiology, transmission, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and future perspectives on Norovirus. Despite its significant public health burden, limited therapeutic options and vaccine development challenges remain key hurdles in controlling outbreaks. By delving into recent advancements and ongoing research efforts, this article aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of Norovirus and highlight strategies for effective management and mitigation.
