HERBAL COSMETICS –AN ANCIENT REVIEW & CONTEMPORARY TREND
Jambla Neha*
ABSTRACT Herbal products, made from plant parts like leaves and roots, are considered non-toxic. Cosmetics are defined as substances used to cleanse, treat skin issues, cover imperfections, and beautify. In ancient Ayurvedic texts like Ashtānga Hridaya, different cosmetic formulations were recommended for each of the six seasons, with varying ingredients for cold and warm seasons. Medicated oils and butter were used for beautifying the face. Hair removal was a part of beautification and various depilatory agents were used. Remedies for hair growth, preventing hair loss and delaying greying, including dyes, rinses, and deodorants were also common. Cosmetics have been used by both men and women for beauty enhancement for centuries. Herbal plants have long been included in cosmetic formulations due to their natural and harmless properties. However, cosmetics alone are not enough for effective beauty enhancement and skincare. This is why herbs are added, as they help prevent skin damage and aging with their natural compounds. Herbal cosmetics have gained widespreadpopularity because they are free from the side effects often linked to synthetic alternatives. Keywords: Herbal, Ayurveda, Beauty, Skin, Industry.
