Abstract

ROLE OF MEDHA DHATU IN ETIOPATHOGENISIS OF YAKRIT VIKARA

Harika Bangi* and A. S. Patil

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Ayurveda considers medha as the fourth dhatu that has resemblance with adipose tissue and dysregulation of medha dhatu leads to many vikaras, one of which is yakrit medha. Method: This is a brief view to understand role of medha dhatu in formation of yakrit vikara as per classical literature to better comprehend samprapti of medhaja yakrit vikara to implement enhanced preventive and curative strategies in clinical manifestations. Result: Obesity with dietary habits, environmental factors may lead to raised FFA and cholesterol, developed insulin resistance, adipocyte proliferation and dysfunction and release of pro inflammatory adipokines. This altered the function of kayagni that produces durmeda. So, deposition of durmeda and kapha leads to altered activity of gut microbiome that further leads to accumulation of triglycerides and toxic level of FFA, free cholesterol band other lipid metabolites, that cause mitochondrial dysfunction leading to oxidative stress and activation of unfolded protein responseleading to hepatic inflammation and fibrogenesis. Discussion: Medha has a key role in formation of yakrit vikara and its progression from yakrit medha to yakritdallodara. So the knowledge of its role in etiopathogenisis is required for better understanding and improved treatment planning.

Keywords: Medha, Yakrit medha, Yakrit vikara, Durmedha, triglycerides, Free fatty acids.
